Next year will see the release (and the acclaim) of the self-titled debut album by Women, a rather google-challenging band from Alberta, Canada. Combining elements of shoegaze, jangly math-rock, pop melodies and experimental blasts of noise, the band somehow manage to gel every conceivable influence into a dense, challenging sound. Expect to hear a lot more about this band next year.
Ahead of the release, Women will be visiting Ireland as support to experimental songwriter Chad VanGaalen (a longtime friend of the band who produced the album). VanGaalen was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2007 for his second album Skelliconnection; an impressive set of delicate songs based on synths, guitars and various homemade instruments.
You can catch the two acts in Crawdaddy, on Nov 30th. Tickets are onsale now for €14.
Their debut album is due for release in Ireland on Jagjaguwar (home of Bon Iver, Black Mountain, Okkervil River) in January 2009. Check out the awesome cover art!
