Weekend round-up

1 Comment 23 January 2009

We’ve been nominated in the longlist for Best Music Blog and Best Newcomer in the 2009 Irish Blog Awards! Thanks for the votes.

Better late than never? Read our reflections upon 2008, our first year (well half a year) online, with my Top 30 Albums list…

This weekend sees a few good gigs on in Dublin – The Zombies are in Whelans tonight, Irish black metal stars Primordial in the Button Factory tomorrow, and Lucky Dragons with Sunken Foal in the Joy Gallery on Sunday.

Today also happens to be Free Art Friday, a great new idea where generous artists create and donate works to the public by leaving them lying around the streets of Dublin, waiting to be claimed by anyone who wants them. Keep your eyes open!

Cork has the excellent Max Tundra playing the Pavillion tonight, while Cypress Avenue has a nice double bill of James Yorkston & Adrian Crowley on Sunday.

The next couple of months are already filling up with gigs aplenty, some exciting new announcements include:

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – the RDS, July 11th / Passion Pit and Hockey – Whelans, March 1st / Ponytail and Adesibi Shank – Whelans, March 11th / Biz Markie – Whelans, March 26th / Nadja and Aiden Bakervenue TBC, March 26th / Frightened Rabbit venue TBC, April 1st / Squarepushervenue TBC, April 25th

State have a new mix online, put together by The Camden Slags – give it a listen.

New albums on the way soon from Sonic Youth (they’re twittering the mixing process), Peter, John & Bjorn, Trail of Dead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Decemberists and Crystal Antlers. Some nice artwork too:

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - The Century of Self Crystal Antlers - Tentacles The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love Peter, Bjorn & John - Living Thing

Joaquin Phoenix’s new career as a rapper took a tumble when he fell offstage in LA. Oh dear…

Indie/Country music heroes the Silver Jews have split up, with reclusive main man Dave Berman planning to focus on his writing.

Animal Collective’s new video for the brilliant My Girls:

The image at the top of the post is composed of a cat and some swimmers I found on the marvellous Dark Roasted Blend. I’m hoping to continue this theme by adding an artsy/wierd collage to each weekly round-up if time allows me.

[…] party… ooo! We reckon it makes for a much better accompaniment to their music than their My Girls […]
