Villagers @ Cyprus Avenue, Cork, 20/5/2010

0 Comments 25 May 2010

Those hoping to cool off following a scorching summer’s day in Cork last Thursday would have been bitterly disappointed as Cyprus Avenue sweltered with the heat of a capacity crowd. The last time guesslist saw an Irish act sell out the venue well in advance, Fight Like Apes were in town, and punters left as satisfied as they did that night, if for different reasons.

Unassuming as ever, Conor O’Brien, ably backed with a full band ran through a setlist mostly comprised of tracks from his then soon-to-be Number 1 album ‘Becoming A Jackal,’ deviating from the Villagers debut only to play Down, Under The Sea – a reminder, if one was needed of the abundance of other quality, well crafted tunes at O’Brien’s disposal. The performances are both intimate, suiting the setting, and forceful, pushing the venue to its limits in the best way possible.

Villagers have now played Cyprus Avenue a few times, the Indie-Pendence festival and are due to play the Marquee this summer as support for Grizzly Bear. Demand for the group here in Cork will not diminish anytime soon, and it remains to be seen if intimate venues such as Cyprus Avenue will be able to host Villagers as they continue to rise.

Setlist:

  • The Meaning of The Ritual
  • Home
  • Becoming A Jackal
  • That Day
  • Pieces
  • To Be Counted Among Them
  • The Pact (I’ll Be Your Fever)
  • I Saw The Dead
  • Down, Under The Sea
  • Ship of Promises

Girls Names - You Should Know By Now

One of the most exciting new bands around at the moment, Belfast’s Girls Names profile continues to rise and rise.

They’ve been described as hot shit, featured on Pitchfork, and they’ve just sold out another run of their second 12” release -You Should Know By Now on Tough Love records.

They’re currently off touring the UK (having played a great gig supporting Dum Dum Girls the other night) – it looks like the 3 piece will have a busy summer ahead.

Here’s one of the highlights:

Tame Impala – Innerspeaker

Really liking what I’ve heard of Tame Impala, a bunch of sun-soaked psych rockers from Perth, Australia.

They’ve put out a couple of 7”s and are set to release their debut album Innerspeaker in a couple of weeks – I’ve a feeling I’ll be listening to this a lot over the coming summer.

Their grasp of prog and classic rock sounds remind me a lot of Dungen, which is no bad thing – lots of wah-drenched guitar, shimmery vocals and rolling drums add up to create a gorgeously lazy summer vibe.

Tame Impala – Runway, Houses, Cities, Clouds

Tame Impala – Solitude of Bliss

Innerspeaker is out on May 21st, you can pre-order it here.
