While a plethora of events will be vying for you attention this year, few can claim to have as much bang for your buck as the Indiependence Festival taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

From its humble origins as a free open air town event to an award winning showcase for the very best in emerging Irish talent, 2009 sees Indiependence take to a new green field site on the outskirts of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, complete with three stages, the Bavaria Stage, the Cyprus Avenue Arena and The Red Bull Village all packed to the brim with must-see acts including Super Furry Animals, Ocean Colour Scene, Fight Like Apes, Delorentos, The Blizzards, RSAG, Fred, The Frank & Walters, Villagers and many many more.

Mitchelstown will be the epicenter of a party on the August weekend, with all bars in the town granted a bar extension to keep the festivities rolling into the small hours.

The ethos of the festival has always been to promote good music and provide value for money for the punter. With this in mind two-day weekend tickets for Indiependence cost just €59, while day passes cost €39.

With thanks to Shane and the gang at Indiependence, Guesslist has 10 pairs of weekend tickets to give away between now and July 24. Starting today we will have weekly giveaways every Friday on the blog to win one of two pairs of tickets. Meanwhile, over on our twitter account (@guesslist) we will invite Twitter followers to stake their claim to one of two pairs sometime over the next four weeks. About Holly:

Holly Golightly was born in Kensington, London, in the same hospital that Jimi Hendrix died in. As a toddler she grew up in a bohemian household and was raised on a diet of psychedelic rock and soul.

Holly kicked off her musical career in the legendary garage band Thee Headcoatees, having never sung a note before that. She spent four years as a Headcoatee before breaking away to release her first solo record, The Good Things, in 1995. Where the Headcoatees sound was a blend of girl group sounds and three-chord garage-rock with all the original songs coming from the pen of Billy Childish, Holly’s solo sound is more a blend of pre-rock electric blues, folk rock. Holly primarily writes all her own material, which are interspersed with a wide range of covers of songs by such artists as Willie Dixon, Ike Turner, Lee Hazelwood, Wreckless Eric, and Bill Withers.

Holly Golightly is definitely the most interesting and diverse artist to come out of the Billy Childish school and is certainly one of the better singer/songwriters of the post-grunge era.

Since her debut, Golightly has been extremely prolific, releasing 12 long play albums including a few collaborations and over fifteen singles for a wide variety of labels. She has also toured America eight times, but has never had proper distribution, until now.

Although Holly’s sound has remained remarkably consistent throughout, each record has a quality that sets it apart from the others. Some highlights include 1998′s Serial Girlfriend, which is a collection of home-recorded tracks and work in progress, make for a diverse and unusual compilation.

In 1999, the album In Blood came out, dueting with Billy Childish, where the two sound like a scuffed-up Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. Her personal favourite is “God Don’t Like It” from 2000 which still forms a large part of her live set today. In 2001 she also collected up all thirteen of her singles and E.P’s (at the time) onto one double album called Single’s Round-Up.

Over the years Holly has made guest appearances on various other bands projects such as Mudhoney, The White Stripes, etc. Holly sang on the track “Eye On You” on Rocket From The Crypt’s 1998 album as well as appearing riding on a giant rocket fuelled lipstick for their video of the top 40 single “Lipstick.”

After playing several shows with the White Stripes and bringing the band’s attention to the analog delights of Toe Rag studios in East London, they asked Holly to duet with them on the track “It’s True That We Love One Another” which then appeared on their huge album Elephant.

Her 2003 album, Truly She Is None Other brought Holly a wider audience thanks to the exposure of the White Stripes as well as keeping the die-hard fans happy. “Tell Me Now So I Know” from the album also featured as the title track to Jim Jarmush’s film Broken Flowers. In 2004 she released her album Slowly But Surely another collection of self penned songs with a few covers thrown in for good measure, this album was produced by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios in London. In the last year Holly has put together a compilation called My First Holly Golightly Album based around the bands live favourites including rerecording of some of their early tunes as well as a re-issue of her second album Laugh it Up.

2007 saw an increase in activity and acclaim once again with Holly starting the year with an album of songs she recorded at home with long time friend and US touring companion Lawyer Dave. The album is called You Can’t Buy A Gun When You’re Crying and is a much more stark album than the usual Holly stuff but it’s packed full of great tunes and weird ideas.

Her new album, the sublime Dirt Don’t Hurt is due out in October 14, 2008 and is her best yet and should help to establish Holly as one of the most unique and eclectic singers around.

Giveaway: Matt Elliott

news

Competition

Domino Records

Dublin

Foggy Notions

Giveaway

Live

Matt Elliott

Tickets

Whelans
<guid
